Late Shri Shyam Sunder Madan
(1939–2024)
Late Shri Shyam Sunder Madan lived a life that beautifully demonstrated how worldly success and spiritual growth can coexist in perfect harmony. From witnessing the hardships of Partition as a young child, to rebuilding life through determination, leading industries and social organizations, dedicating himself to community service, and eventually embracing a life centred on Yoga, self-learning, and spiritual practice, his journey reflected resilience, purpose, and boundless enthusiasm for life.
He believed that success was meaningful only when it was shared, that knowledge became valuable only when it uplifted others, and that life should be experienced with gratitude, curiosity, and compassion. Whether guiding a business, serving society, travelling the world, teaching Yoga, or simply bringing his family together, he approached every role with the same warmth, humility, and infectious joy.
To those who knew him, he was more than a leader or teacher. He was a mentor, a friend, a source of encouragement, and a constant reminder that growing older should never mean stopping the pursuit of learning, adventure, or inner growth. His life continues to inspire the values upon which the Yoga School of Bharat stands—lifelong learning, selfless service, conscious living, and the celebration of life itself.
A Life of Leadership, Service, and Joyful Living
Born in 1939 in Multan, Late Shri Shyam Sunder Madan entered the world during one of the most turbulent periods in Indian history. At the age of eight, he witnessed the horrors of the Partition of India—a tragedy that forced millions of families to abandon their homes and begin life again from nothing. Among the memories that stayed with him throughout his life were the heartbreaking scenes of trains carrying countless victims of the violence. Those experiences, though deeply painful, quietly shaped the compassion, resilience, and gratitude that later became the foundation of his character.
His childhood was marked by personal loss as well. He lost his mother at a very young age, and after his father’s remarriage, two much younger siblings became part of the family. Life demanded responsibility long before adulthood arrived. Following the passing of his father, he naturally stepped into the role of guardian, becoming the strongest pillar of support for his younger brother, younger sister, and the entire family. Alongside raising his own three daughters with love and care, he helped nurture and establish the lives of his younger siblings, always placing family before personal comfort.
Despite these challenges, he remained determined to pursue education. In 1963, he graduated as a Mechanical Engineer from Bhopal and began his professional career at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), working in the Process and Rate Department of Water Turbines. His future appeared secure, yet circumstances demanded another sacrifice. When his father’s health deteriorated, he chose to leave the stability of a government career to return home and take responsibility for his family.
In 1971, he began a new chapter by establishing his own industry in Jaipur, manufacturing automatic pulse processing plants. Starting once again from the ground up, he transformed determination into opportunity and built a respected business through hard work, innovation, and ethical leadership. His entrepreneurial success was accompanied by a deep commitment to improving the industry itself. Over the following decades, he served in numerous leadership positions within trade associations, including the Jaipur Dal Millers Association, the Rajasthan Dal Mill Owners Association, and the Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, contributing significantly to the development and modernization of the pulse processing sector across the state.
His desire to serve extended far beyond business. Throughout his life, he remained actively involved in community organizations, educational institutions, and humanitarian initiatives. As a dedicated member and later President, Zone Chairman, Region Chairman, National Coordinator, and award recipient within Lions Clubs International, he led countless service projects that positively impacted society. His work was recognised nationally and internationally, reflecting not only his leadership but also his unwavering commitment to serving others.
One of the causes closest to his heart was the preservation of India’s traditional crafts. As President of the Crafts Council of Rajasthan for more than two decades, he worked tirelessly to support rural artisans by helping connect their exceptional craftsmanship with broader markets. He believed that preserving traditional skills was not merely an economic activity but also a way of preserving India’s cultural heritage for future generations.
His contributions also extended to educational institutions, industry development, and national policy discussions. He represented Rajasthan in meetings with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), participated in Reserve Bank of India committees, delivered invited presentations before the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, and continued serving the Rajasthan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in various leadership capacities. Every role he accepted was driven not by personal recognition but by the desire to contribute meaningfully wherever he could.
By the age of sixty, however, he reached a decision that surprised many around him. Having built a successful business, seen his three daughters happily settled in life, helped his younger siblings establish respected and independent lives, and fulfilled every responsibility he believed was entrusted to him, he felt his work in the business world was complete. He chose to retire voluntarily, sold his factory, settled every outstanding obligation, ensured that no worker was left burdened by debt or uncertainty, and stepped away from commercial life with complete peace of mind. For him, success was never measured by how much one accumulated, but by knowing when one’s responsibilities had been fulfilled and having the wisdom to embrace the next chapter of life.
Retirement marked not an ending but a new beginning. Free from business responsibilities, he devoted himself entirely to travel, learning, service, and spiritual growth. His search eventually brought him to the Ramakrishna Mission Ashram, where he found the spiritual guidance that deepened his understanding of Yoga and Vedanta. From that point onward, spirituality was no longer simply a personal interest—it became the centre of his daily life.
For nearly twenty years, he taught Yoga, Pranayama, and philosophy within his community, encouraging people to cultivate health, self-awareness, and inner balance. His classes were never limited to physical postures; they became spaces where practical wisdom, humour, compassion, and meaningful conversations naturally blended together. He believed that Yoga should make people happier, healthier, kinder, and more conscious in every aspect of life.
Those who knew him remember not only his wisdom but also his remarkable enthusiasm for life. He possessed an infectious sense of humour, extraordinary kindness, and an ability to make every gathering feel joyful. Age never diminished his curiosity or adventurous spirit. Whether travelling across India, exploring Europe, sharing Yoga in Mauritius, or happily riding roller coasters in Dubai well into his eighties, he lived each experience with the excitement of a young heart. His favourite reminder was that age belongs to the body, never to the mind.
Perhaps one of his most beautiful qualities was his love for family. Every year, he brought together children, grandchildren, and extended relatives for memorable holidays and celebrations. His philosophy was simple yet profound: “Everything I have will belong to you one day. Why should I wait? Let me share it with you while we can create memories together.” Through this way of living, he transformed family relationships into lifelong friendships built upon love, generosity, laughter, and shared experiences.
For me personally, he was much more than a grandfather. He was my closest companion, mentor, travel partner, and one of the greatest influences on my own journey. During nearly twenty years together, we travelled across India and the world, shared countless conversations, explored new ideas, and reflected deeply on life, Yoga, and spirituality. He witnessed my own inner evolution, encouraged my curiosity, challenged my thinking, and inspired me to continue searching for truth with an open mind and a joyful heart. Many of the values that shape my life today were nurtured through those precious years spent in his company.
Even after his passing in 2024, his presence continues to live through the countless lives he enriched. His legacy is not defined merely by the positions he held or the organisations he served, but by the kindness he extended, the wisdom he shared, the joy he spread, and the example he set. He showed that a meaningful life is not measured by professional success alone, but by the love we give, the people we uplift, the experiences we embrace, and the values we leave behind.
His Influence on Yoga School of Bharat
The Yoga School of Bharat is built upon the understanding that Yoga is not an escape from life but a way of living it more consciously, compassionately, and joyfully. This understanding has been deeply inspired by the life of Late Shri Shyam Sunder Madan.
He demonstrated that one can successfully fulfil worldly responsibilities, serve society with dedication, care deeply for family, continue learning throughout life, and still walk a sincere spiritual path with humility and gratitude. His example reminds us that spirituality and everyday life are not separate journeys—they are two expressions of the same conscious way of living.
For us, he will always be remembered not only as a beloved grandfather, teacher, and guide, but as a living example of joyful service, lifelong learning, fearless curiosity, and unconditional love. His life continues to inspire the educational mission of the Yoga School of Bharat, encouraging every learner to embrace life fully while walking the path of wisdom with an open heart.
